This winter we have been studying Rube Goldberg and his fascinating, "time-saving" contraptions. The students viewed many examples of Rube-like contraptions in ads and movies. Check out which ones we liked best here.
As part of our study of Rube Goldberg, we took our knowledge of cause/effect contraptions and simple machines to create marble runs. The challenge was to see how many points we could earn for our marble runs. The run scored 1 point for each second the marble was moving through the run, 2 points for each section of the run that had a moving part (if a student had to step in and help the marble along the run at any time it was -5 points).
